Spiders & Snakes  (Jun 2006)

The dangers from both are vastly overstated in Belize.

I grew up in Arizona, and they were MUCH WORSE there!

The scorpions in Belize, are big, black, scary looking, and not very deadly. (The little straw-coloured one in Arizona is much worse.)

The big black water spider you EEEEK find in your shower is harmless, and so is the tarantula.  I have never seen a Black Widow here.

The Fer-de-Lance (also called "Yellowjaw" or "Tommygoff" by Belizeans) may be the most deadly pit-viper in the world, but in five years of driving back roads, walking thru jungle, I never saw one. I used to see two or three rattlesnakes a week in Arizona!

So. Skip Arizona. Visit Belize. Stay on the paths & walkways. Have a wonderful time.
