SAM IS DEAD (Aug 2011)
The legendary Floyd "Sam" Johnson died this past April.
Here
is his obituary in the Colorado Springs Gazette.
Sam sold the diner in 1996... his legs were giving out after almost 40 years
of standing!
The Codger Breakfast. For almost 10 years, a group of admirers
(and ultimately, close friends) met for breakfast every Wednesday at Bon Ton's
in Old Colorado City. Eventually, Sam was confined to bed, and folks would
go down to Security (which we called "Hooterville") on Wednesday's to
visit. Ultimately, even that became too strenuous.
I called Sam several times through the years with questions about cooking,
but when I cam back to the Springs, I never visited... always putting it off.
Too late now, but I'm sure I'll see him in Heaven!!
