PALAPA PIX

Here are a series of pictures which describe our path to a beautiful palapa in our back yard.

The support poles are going up, and many of the cut poles are piled in front of the trailer.

(Above)  Ed's truck is almost obscured by thatch which was cut in the bush, and brought into our back yard.

(Right) The poles are going up into a framework which will support the thatched roof of the palapa.

(Left)  The frame is looming up over the trailer -- much higher than we might have expected -- but of course, it has to be this high to cover everything!

(Right) Salvatore, our palapa- builder, is more comfortable perching in the framework than he would be on the ground!  This work is his life, and his family supports that life by helping whenever and wherever they can.

Above are some details of construction.  Salvatore cuts every piece of thatch so that they ar identical.  A portion of the thatch goes over the cross pole and the two outside parts go underneath.  The work is very routine, and monotonous, and of course, that is the mark of a craftsman -- the regularity of the whole is the hallmark of his craftsmanship.
