THE NEWSPAPERS

For a continuing view of the country, you should go to the newspapers. For balance you should read several.  Each has a different perspective on the news, but they all seem to run the same advertisements!  (Advertisers don't want to risk offending a specific group of readers.)  All of these papers are weeklies, all appear on the stands on Fridays, with a Sunday publication date.  As noted, some of them have an active website.

New!  The Star.  Published by Alberto August and edited by his wife Nyani Azueta-Augist, The STAR has a regional flavor, with a lot of news about the Cayo District.  It feels a lot like a "home town paper" to me.  Check it out here. .

Gone!  The Independent Reformer.  Trevor Vernon's new effort.  You can find it here on my website, or buy a hard copy at your local newstand (in Belize.)

The Reporter.  Formerly, the most independent paper in the country.  It is also the most literate in English, but it also carries columns in Spanish and Creole.  Click here to visit their very active website. At their website, you can subscribe to a "morning paper" which comes in your E-mail everyday.  If you are planning to relocate to Belize, this is a good move.

Amandala.  The paper with the largest circulation; it has a predominantly black perspective, shaped by its owner and editor, Evan X. Hyde.  Hyde was a revolutionary in the 70s, a strong independent thinker today, but his bias is clearly in favor of the blacks who make up a large percentage of the population.  Click here to visit their website.

The Belize Times.  The voice of the PUP carries government news, policy statements, court proceedings, and lots of pictures of politicians and their accomplishments.  If you want a steady stream of government press releases, go to www.belize.gov.bz and sign up. WARNING:  There are lots of very trivial releases!

The Guardian.  The voice of the UDP.  The UDP is very critical of the PUP and constantly carries more negative news than the Times.  For instance, if you want to see how many accidents are occurring on the Northern Highway, you will find it in The Guardian, but not in The Times!.  The Guardian appears on the UDP website and you can see it here.

The San Pedro Sun.  This newsy weekly clearly has an agenda to promote San Pedro as a tourist Mecca, but it's full of local news, opinionated columnists, and advertisements for everything that's going on on Ambergris Caye.  Click here to visit their website and subscribe..

If you're surfing, an excellent source is BelizeNews.  "Your one-stop source of news for Belize news and information."  Has links to all the newspapers, radio and TV stations, etc. etc.  Very useful.
