Mommas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be CaneBoys

When we first started playing at the Last Resort, an enthusiastic Belizean named "Turkey" suggested that I oughta write the definitive song about Cane Boys -- Caneros -- or cane cutters.

Caneros are the cowboys of Belize.  When the cane is ripe, they set fire to the field to release the sugar from the cane, and while it is still smoking, the caneros cut it with a machette, (pronounced "Mah-Chet") bundle an armload up over their shoulder, and walk up a ten foot ladder to load it into a cane truck.  They start very early in the morning, and work until the field is clean.

Mommas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Caneboys,

Don't let'em use machetes or load them ol' trucks,

Make 'em be preachers or lawyers or such,       (pronounced "liars")

Mommas, Don't let your Babies Grow Up to be Caneboys

'Cause they'll never stay home and they're always alone,

Even with someone they love.
