Iris Afterword.

Here is a letter I just got (Oct 2006) from Mary Toy, of Placentia.

Hi Rick:

I just read your account of Hurricane Iris, and you have some inaccuracies
in your report:

1. The only "modular" homes in Placencia Village were two trailers that
provided cheap rooms at Sonny's Resort. Creole cottages housed the rest of
the Village.

2. 95% of Placencia Village was completely destroyed, homes and businesses
(not just businesses). Probably 90% of Seine Bight Village was destroyed.

3. I had no telephone service for a full year after Iris. Getting water
took about 3 months because the government extorted more duty on the pipe
that Placencia had to buy to get water back across the Lagoon. (The
Placencia water board had to buy the pipe for about BZ$500,000 out of our
own funds.) Electricity took from 1-3 months depending on where you lived.

You can read my "diary" of Placencia starting at
http://www.destinationsbelize.com/2001_iri.htm (start at the bottom because
the diary is in reverse chronological order).

Thanks,

Mary
