Hurricanes 2006
We have just had our first hurricane (Alberto.) It is
apparent that it will be a long exciting season. If you are a devoted
hurricane watcher (as I am) I will give you some resources now, and some
comments later on as the season progresses.
Weather Underground, whose insert I use here,
has a wonderful section on tropical hurricanes here at Tropical.
You should bookmark this page; it shows an animation of the current weather and
has some other pointers:
Sea
temperature. The temperature of the sea is critical. When it
gets over 80, it seriously exacerbates existing tropical storms. Katrina,
which devastated New Orleans, was fairly mild as it crossed northern Florida
(going west). When it hit the 85 degree gulf waters, it turned into a
monster. We are all watching sea temp now, whenever a tropical storm
forms. You can see it here.
Dr. Jeff Masters has a blog on Weather Underground,
and you can find a pointer to his latest entry here.
He has pictures of hurricanes, and lots of good information. He is my
choice as the real master of hurricanes.
Navy.
The Naval Research Lab at Monterey (where I taught some software classes!) has
an interesting program which takes data from the National
Hurricane Center and uses it to plot some good forecasts -- perhaps the best
that are available. They also have a satellite picture which is always
interesting.
History.
Lan Sluder just published a history of all the Hurricanes. Note that altho
the "season" starts in June, there haven't been any hurricanes until
later.
Wind Shear. A new
way to look at hurricane conditions. Start reading here.
The GOES map is here.
LOG:
Jul 10, Gulf is sizzling. Caribbean is not. God
help LA if a hurricane (like Katrina) gets in there.
Aug 10. Now the Caribbean is sizzing as well. A
couple of tropical depressions have fizzled out.
Aug 25. A couple more depressions have fizzled out. The
reason? Wind shear! Read about it here.
SUMMARY. (May 2007) Not too exciting! Wind shear took care of
all of the threats. We'll see what happens this year. (Season starts
Jun1).
