Downtown Corozal
I'm fond of pointing out that all of 'downtown Corozal' would
fit inside of one Home Depot, and the parking would be a lot better.
Actually, in the time that we have been in Belize, the parking has gotten
TERRIBLE. In 2002, they officially went back to a scheme where everyone
parks on one side of the street for the first half-month, and on the other side
for the last half-month. You can see the sign for this here.
Back in 'olden times', Kardim's was arguably the best known landmark downtown.

When we first got to Corozal in 1999, there were a lot of
Chinese restaurants. (Regrettably, I have never reviewed these on my Restaurant
pages in this website, but there are a lot of them, and we generally selected
one as 'the best' and ate there when we felt in the mood for Chinese.
There were so many restaurants that the Chinese began
branching out, mostly into Grocery Stores. By the time I returned tr
Belize in 2004 (See the Belizean Chronicles) there were about a dozen new stores, scattered around
town.
In mid-2005, Kardim's began a 'going out of business'
sale. I went in and bought some nicely priced items and suggested that
they might be giving up competing with the Chinese.
"You got it!" they affirmed. While I admire
competition in a free market, I was saddened by the fact of their
closing. The building was subsequently repainted, and Lydia opened a
shoe shop on the premises. as you can see below.

This is the most obvious change to downtown Corozal, but
there are others, and I will discuss them on another
page. It is filled
with pix, and you may not want to go there, if you have a slow internet
connection.
