CHETUMAL

Chetumal, situated on Bahia Chetumal (Chetumal Bay) is the capitol of the province of Quintana Roo. Q-Roo includes the entire eastern coast of the Mexican Yucatan, from Cancun, 200 miles south to "Chet" -- as Belizeans call it. The city is seven miles from the border -- shown at right.  Crossing the border is simple if you're only going to Chet, or the resort area of Bacalar. If you're going farther, you will need a tourist visa costing $15 US.

Chetumal, with over 200,000 population, is is about as populous as the entire country of Belize.  The streets, are broad and well-maintained.

If you want to visit Chetumal, it will cost you.  The Government of Belize has instituted a $10US tax on Gringos every time you go.  See "A Predatory Tax".

Downtown. (more pix coming, including Holiday Inn).  The Holiday Inn, at $80-100 US, is the most expensive hotel in town.  The Los Cocos, a block away, has comparable rooms at half the price and a better bar & restaurant.

Shops.  (pix)  San Francisco, El Mercado.

Why not retire to Chetumal?  Why not, indeed.  If you speak Spanish, you should seriously consider it.  It has many of the advantages we have cited for Corozal; the main disadvantage is lack of stability.

Beware.  If you visit, and you drive, you're Belizean insurance will not cover you in the event of an accident.  You can (and probably will) be arrested, jailed, and your car impounded.

More. New  Here's a photo tour of Chetumal.  Wonderful!  Thank you ConstanceB.
