History Books which vitally concern Belize!

When I arrived in Belize, I had been nominally active in politix, but I was relatively naive about American politics which affects Central America.  As I discussed Belizean history on the Internet and in person, I discovered that the United States has been tinkering with Central American politics off and on since Teddy Roosevelt fueled the Panamanian Revolution in order to create a friendly place for his Canal.   This is common knowledge among most politically aware Belizeans, and you need to catch up!

Here are books which discuss this "tinkering"

Under Fire: An American Story by Oliver North (with William Novak)   Ollie was a hero in the US. Not so in Central America!

Veil: The Secret Wars of the CIA, 1981-1987 by Bob Woodward.

This is an interesting history of the CIA under William Casey (& Ronald Reagan.)  Interesting to me because it reminds me just how much stock those people put on looking good, dressing right, sounding good.  (Just like IBM and Digital Equipment Corp)  William Case waged his own wars in central America, and most Belizeans know of the results, if not the details.

The Making of Belize: Globalization in the Margins by Ann Sutherland.

I mentioned this book on another book page.  It is very scholarly, written by a (now) professor who spent much of her childhood in Belize.  She analyzes the political situations nicely and gave me an edge over some other BZ observers.
