BOOKS ON BELIZE

These are the books on our bookshelf.    New.. I have finally become an Amazon Associate, so you can easily add them to your collection by clicking on the title, which links to Amazon!

New.  I have added a page of books on recent world history which vitally concerns Belize

Newt Ian Vasquez has written two wonderful novels about Belize.  He is currently a copy writer for the St. Petersburg Times.

In The Heat was his first book.  It is a wonderful book about a Belizean prize fighter, forced thru circumstances to become a trouble shooter in Belize City.   If you want to learn about Belize, this is a nice way to do it.  If you're a Belizean, you will love his descriptions of Belize city and it's kulcha!!.

Lonesome Point, starring two brothers, born in Belize, is set in Dade county.  In many ways it's a better book, but both show more promise than delivery.

Bruce Barcott.  The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw: One Woman's Fight to Save the World's Most Beautiful Bird

This is a WONDERFUL book!! I got it from my library. The author shares all of the joys and surprises I first experienced when I discovered Belize. He is properly cynical about the corruption he found here, just as I am. I think the book will be good for Belize...probably destined to be a best-seller... and would be wonderful if the new GOB would take it to heart.

Here is a NYT review of the book and here is the first chapter!

Here is Bruce's Website.  REALLY worth a look!!

Here is a review by Lan Sluder,   He thinks it's the best guide to Belize ever written!

Nancy Koerner:  BELIZE SURVIVOR: Darker Side of Paradise

Nancy's novel is based on her true experiences as a flower child and bride in 80's Belize.

NEWEST!!   Lan Sluder.  Easy Belize: How to Live, Retire, Work and Buy Property in Belize, the English Speaking Frost Free Paradise on the Caribbean Coast

Lan works really hard to keep up-to-date on everything happening in Belize.  This is his newest book, with a really wonderful section on Corozal and BelizeNorth.  He doesn't mention me, but... wottheheck.

Lan Sluder: Adapter Kit: Belize: A Traveler's Tools for Living Like a Local

Must reading for anyone contemplating moving to Belize.

Lan Sluder: Belize First Guide to Mainland Belize

Lan is the man!  He knows more about Belize than almost any one alive, and he tells you about it here.

Tim Merrill: Guyana and Belize: Country Studies (CIA Area Handbook Series.)

I got this book from the US Publishing Office.  It is 'official' -- full of facts, facts, facts.

The Rough Guide to Belize 4 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

Fodor's Belize 2007 (Fodor's Gold Guides)

Gray, Bill & Claire. Belize Retirement Guide: How to Live in a Tropical Paradise on $450 a Month.

Bill and Claire have been beatin' the drum for Belize for over ten years.  Kinda sugar-coated, but interesting.  It does cost more than $450 now.

 Inside Belize (Inside Central America)

Ann Sutherland:  The Making of Belize: Globalization in the Margins

Ann is a social anthropologist who grew up on Ambergris Caye. Now a professior at UC Riverside, she offers many valuable insights into the position of Belize in the world.

James Michener:  Caribbean: A Novel

Michener is one of those things you should do like "eat your spinach."   Not near as much fun as Carl Hiaasen, but he tells you a lot about the people who settled these islands and jungles down here.

A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America

A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya

Newer.  Free Books on Belize.  Lan Sluder has written a couple of -books and you can download them here.
