Belizean Links

A number of links which will show you more about Belize than you want to know!!   New.  Forums & Lists will show you another great source of information which is very dynamic.

Newest:  Bruce Barcott:  Bruce wrote a WONDERFUL book about Sharon Matola, the Belize Zoo and the fight to save the Scarlet Macaw.  Read about that here, and see his website here. (Bruce pulls no punches... you should read him!!)

Live Better in BelizeThis is Lan Sluder's brand new site about Belize.  Check it out!

Belize SurvivorNew!   A novel about Belize, based on a true story.  Look here.

Belize TrekHere's a brand new website for a brand new enterprise.  If the adventure is as good as the pix, you don't want to miss it!

Old River Adventures. New.  Here's an enterprise by my good friend Nial Gillett.  Tours and more.  A wonderful photo tour with sound effects and all. Check it out!

CJ Consulting.  On their site, Chuck & Judy -- construction consultants --  tell you a lot about building your own house or business project here in Belize.  Visit their website and you may want to have them help you build.  New!   Judy tells you all about shopping, bill paying and other essentials here!  Don't miss it!

Real Estate in the North.    New!  Links to well-established local realtors.

DestinationsBelize. Special!  This wonderful website, run by my friend Mary Toy, is full of great info about Placentia and the rest of Belize.  She has one of the best pages of links I've ever seen right here.  If you're already planning on relocating to Belize, she has some good advice here.

Pelican Pathway. New.  This wonderful site chronicles the adventures of a couple who built a house at Consejo Shores, just north of Corozal.  It is full of wonderful pictures and advice for potential builders!  There is also an interesting discussion of the TAX situation here.

Ray's Falconview Hostel New.  Ray Auxillou is an old time Belizean fisherman/sea captain who "fled" to Florida for a while and then came back and built a 'Low Budget Tourist Backpackers Adventure Hostel' in Hilllview, a little suburb next to Santa Elena Town in Western Belize.  He hosts a Music Festival every year.  Check it out.

Ray's Hydroponics.  New.  Ray Auxillou is experimenting with hydroponics.  Check it out here

Marie Sharp's USNew  I know you've been frustrated trying to get Marie Sharp's wonderful hot sauce at Wal-Mart.  It's a sometimes proposition, but you can always get it here!

Miss Lena's Blog.  New. Miss Lena is a very funny American gringa who moved to Belize a couple of years ago.  Her observations are both pungent and poignant.

Addresses (E-mail & Snail-Mail) Addresses of all the government offices. Well, they're supposed to be the addresses.  The fact that the phone numbers are still in the old six-digit format when Belize went to the 7-digit (3 plus 4) international standard three years ago does not inspire confidence in these numbers.

AmbergrisCayeSan Pedro is our closest diving/fishing site, available in 20 minutes by plane for about $55.  Check it out here or  GoAbergrisCaye  (which is boycotting my site.... ask them about it!)
Ambergris Caye has a library of documents and other links referring to Belize. It's an offshoot of the site above, but you can get to it directly by clicking here.
They claim that they get 6,500 hits a day, so they must be doing something right.  (Actually, my stats tell me that I am getting 100,000 hits a month, so I must be doing something right as well!)

Basil Jones. New.  This site has many many Belizean links (including one to me) if that's what you're looking for!

Belize Development Company  Ron Forrester has been selling real property in Belize since 1987.  He has a number of developments on the South Side.  He also puts out a very nice newsletter which you can subscribe to on his site.

Belize First.  Lan Sluder lives in North Carolina, travels to Belize once or twice a year, and gives you his very candid views of the best (and sometimes worst) of Belize.  His magazine, Belize First is a good bet if you're living in the States and want to keep up with happenings here.  His website is a capsule of the magazine, and is an essential stop on your web-tour of Belize.  His book, Belize First Guide to Mainland Belize, is the best book on touring the country (He is currently working on a new edition.)  If you're thinking of moving to Belize, you MUST get his book Adapter Kit: Belize, available hereNew. You can get a copy (free) of his new guide to San Pedro here.

Belize@EscapeArtist.comOriented toward the Gringo who wants to get away for financial reasons!  Lots of "old news"  -- for instance -- BTL is not "government subsidized"  -- it certainly doesn't need to be; basically, it's stealing from everyone who uses its facilities and paying obscene profits to its owners.

Belize Law.  All of the Laws of Belize are here.  The website says that they are current to 2000, but many have been updated to 2003.  You should search on the word "act" to get a list of all of the laws.

Belize Police.  Thanks to the efforts of G. Michael Reid, the Belize Police Department now has an excellent website which chronicles their progress on recent and ongoing cases.  Fills a desperate need!!  Thanks, Gmike.

Belize Tourism. The official Website of the Belize Tourism Board.

Belize Total. New.  A directory to other Belizean Links.  Could be useful.  Growing every day.

Belize News -- TV Channel 5. One of the two channels emanating from Belize City.

Belize News -- TV Channel 7.  The other channel in Belize!

Belize Magazine.  These people treated me very badly and I regard them as slime-dogs.  You'll have to find their link on your own!.

Belizeone  A section oriented search zone like Yahoo, but with categories related to Belize instead of the US.

Belize ReportA really good source of tourist and resident information.

Belize.com.  A very old, very commercial site.  They don't link to me, and their page on Corozal is three years out of date.

Belize National Weather ServiceUsed to send out a daily forecast.  Now you have to look.

Belize Statistics.   New.  This site is just starting up.

Bird Watching  Belize is a bagger's paradise!  This page will show you all the links!

Burrell Boom.  Nial Gillett used to work for Compaq in Texas, and I first met him there. (via internet)  He has since returned to his home in Belize, and become the mayor of Burrell Boom, a very nice village on the cutoff from the Northern highway (thru Hattieville) to the Western Highway.  He has crafted a very nice site for his home town, and I invite you to see it here

Caske 2000 Sea Kayak Expedition These guys spent three years going from California to Columbia by kayak.  They had some exciting adventures and some great recipes!

Caves Branch.  A 58,000 acre estate featuring all sorts of adventure tours.  Located south of Belmopan, this is not "sun, sea, sand" etc.pace, but an authentic jungle envrionment.  Run by Ian Anderson, who promises excitement.

Caye Caulker Chronicles. This is a personal website by Wendy Auxillou, the 'first lady' of Caye Caulker.  Wendy owns several rental properties and is very knowledgeable about everything that happens on CC.  There is a blog and a forum.

Caye Caulker PixAAAAAAAThe Johnson's love to travel, and Al loves to take pictures.  Take a look at his tour of Caye Cauker, ca. 2005.  He's going back soon so there will be more. (Feb 2007)

Coconut Oil  "Dr. Snake" -- Peter Singfield, is making extra virgin coconut oil and selling it on the internet.  Click here to visit his wonderful site and see him in action.  (Brace yourself for partial nudity!).

Come to Hoptkins.   This website describes one of my favorite towns in Belize.  Hopkins (south of Dangriga, which is south of Belize City ) has a real beach and an unspoiled feeling it's hard to find now a ways.  And the road is not bad to drive.  <grin>

corozal.com  Featuring Corozal Community College, the school I taught at when I first got down here (be true to your school, eh?) and a WONDERFUL source of local pix and info. A contribution to the community by Jan and Judy Wilson.  New:  Jan and Judy have recently added all of the 12000 pictures they took for yearbook purposes from 1999 to 2006.  There are even a couple of pix of <gasp> Sr. Ric!  Thanks, J&J, for a wonderful gift to the web!!

corozal.bz  This website, run by my friend Judy Wilson, has all the little businesses in Corozal.  Some of them have "websitos"  (little websites) and some have a picture.

Consejo. NEW.  Website built by some folks who will have a house for rent in Consejo.  NIce look around the place!

Consejo.bz  New.  This is an additional effort by John McMasters, hard to find if you're not looking!  Check it out. John had a page of Northern Belize Classified here. but I note that he gave up.  The Gringos are just SO SATISFIED...  <hee, hee>

Emory King.  The author emeritus of Belize has his own website.  I have always thought most of his little books were overpriced but I will heartily recommend his 2006 Driver's Guide to Belize.  It is priceless -- filled with little gems of information about where you're going.  You can buy it at the Airport!!

Official Belizean Government websiteYou can look at the Manifesto, and its implementation here. This is the best place to find late breaking news from the government.  However, in presenting the new, they have obliterated some old stuff that's pretty important.  Write me if you want details.

Tips for Travelers to MexicoFrom the U. S. State Department.

Ek TunThis wonderful resort is run by my friend Phyllis Lane. Located on the Macal River (perhaps soon to be obliterated by the notorious Chalillo Dam) it is a wonderful eco-experience.  (Ek Tun is Mayan for "Black Rock")

Encyclopedia BrittanicaNew.  Has a really interesting entry from the 1911 version of the EB which describes the derivation of the name "Belize."  A lot of other interesting historical information as well.

Drive Mexico.  Mexican Insurance - Buy and print Mexican auto insurance policies immediately on your own printer. Can also insure boats, motorcycles, trailers, RVs and properties (home, condo, apartment etc).

Belizenet "Complete Information on Belize"

The Belize Search Engine.  Searches the hundreds of sites on Belize... except for mine!  <Don't get mad, Rick, just get even.>  Mostly tells you how to find real estate, how to look at real estate, and how to buy real estate. (Doesn't everyone want to buy a piece of Belize??)

Fernando's Seaside Guesthouse is an excellent destination if you want to spend time in a typical Belizean fishing village.  (Sarteneja -- former home of my sideman, Mr. Brad Moore!)

Laughing Bird Caye National Park.  A beautiful and informative site for people who want to visit vicariously.

Local Gringos  Nope!  This site has given up trying to keep up with Corozal.  Newer.  Look here if you want to catch up with Margaret and Mark on eBay. Newest.  Margaret has revamped her site completely and added a Blog.  Belize is just a memory.

LoveFM.  Everybody listens to Love, especially when they're interviewing somebody controversial!  They are sorta "the voice of Amandala" Good talk show in the morning, good Belizean music.  You can actually listen to the radio by clicking here

The Belize Zoo  Another beautiful site about the flora and fauna of our little country.

The Belize Audibon SocietyBelize has over 500 species of birds and is a "birders" paradise. Read about them here.

Summer In Belize Summer specials from the Belize Tourist Board

National Geographic.  This entry in the famous explorer's journal will tell you all about Belize.  Good lookin'!

Naturalight Productions Ltd., Belize Tony Rath's site has hundreds of breathtaking pictures of Belize.  He originated and supervises BelizeRing, a set of informative (as opposed to sales-oriented) sites about Belize.  I was invited to join, but I've been too lazy to hook up.  Oh well, you found me, thank goodness!

NorthernBelize.com.  A very sanitized site about the same area that I cover here.  Wonderful pictures.  Pretty much sweetness and light, but we need some of that too, huh?   New: Strangely, the site has NOTHING about retirement or Gringo retirees!  And, of course, it doesn't point to nasty old me!

Pirates? New.  Belize is famous in history as the hideout for the most notorious pirates of the Caribbean.  To find out all about them, click here.  Newer.  If you want a funnier take, click here

Planet Belize.   This website has plenty of Belizean links to check out, and seems to focus more on the South, particularly on Placentia.

Progresso Heights.  New.  Progresso Heights is about 15 miles away on a pretty bad road. but then most of the dirt roads in Belize are pretty bad.  James Anderson isn't really selling lots but he has a great personal site here which will show you what's going on there.

RealEstateInBelize. NewThis site has FREE ads showing properties all around Belize.  Very nice.

Seine Bight.  New.  Has lots of interesting information about this southern village and its mostly Garifuna population.

ShrinkinFeet. Here's a new site about Consejo, the village to the north of Corozal.  It has a really good photo tour of Chetumal.  Check it out!   [Constance has a page of 'friendly links' to websites about Corozal.  This site is not included.  What do you think?]

Telemanage. My friend Eric Schaub and his family came down to Corozal in 2002 in a big converted bus.  He is now in Honduras, installing Satellite dishes.  You can an read about his Belizean adventures here, and his various consulting services here

Tours and TripsI have a new page of links to people who can help you arrange your trip.  See it here.

Travels with the Johnsons.  The Johnsons live in Virginia, but they travel everywhere, and take wonderful pictures.  Their four trips to Belize will give you an excellent view of what to expect when you visit.

The Newspapers are all listed on my page here. Along with the TV stations, they have all the current news.

Toucan TrailA site which features 100 Belizean Hotels which you may not find in the normal gliltzy brochures about Belize.  You should check it out, but be warned.  They lie.  Corozal has no "long manicured beach."  Their list of Corozal hotels is almost as good as mine!

Victoria's Secret  No! Not that Victoria!  Victoria Ogaldez, a recent grad of the Klessheim Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management in Austira, has created a website which perfectly describes the wide diversity of culture in Belize.  A good short introduction to Garifuna culture and the Garinagu (people) who preserve their heritage, even as they blend into the Belizean Melting Pot!
