Alternatives to Belize

Lots of people are looking at Belize for retirement and deciding on someplace else!!  And some people from here are thinking about leaving, because of political unrest and the "gouge the Gringo" attitude shown by the government lately.

Here are some alternative places to check out.

The PhilippinesNew. Art Bell recently relocated to the Philippines.  It's a long way, but you might want to look into it. Here is a letter which gives you a lot of details about the Philippines.

Panama  Lan Sluder did a study which compares Corozal with Boquete, a town in Panama that is very similar in size.  His 32-page report is available here.  (Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you can download the report.)   Here is a letter from an old friend. NewerHere's an interesting letter from Lan Sluder, who just visited Panama in 2006.   Newest.  A letter from a couple who tried Panama, and are now further south.

Honduras (Roatan Island) My friend Eric used to live in Corozal, but he found it difficult to make a living here (he sells and installs satellite dishes) and so he moved to Roatan.  You can read about all of his adventures here, including two recent letters about life in Roatan. Newest.  Here is the latest letter from Eric, along with a number of links to other websites which discuss Roatan.  Thanks, Eric!

Guatemala (Live on a boat on the Rio Dulce or Lake Izabal)

Mexico (check out Guadalajara, Ajijic, Lake Chapala and Majahual)  Majahual (pronounced "mah-hah-wahl") is an booming area just north of Chetumal. People predict that it will be "the next Cancun"    South of there Xcalak beckons.  Read about that here.

There is a letter which is circulating right now (May 2006) which gives Mexico a pretty bad rap.  You can read about the letter here.

Enclaves.  All of these locations have Gringo Enclaves, where everyone (including shopkeepers) speak English and are happy to see the Gringos coming in to keep their country green.  Too bad Belize doesn't appreciate that.

Newbies.  If you've just started looking around you might want to go here, and perhaps sample some other places.

If you have chosen someplace else, I hope you will let me know.

Calderitas  New.  (Sep 06)  A number of people are moving from Corozal to Calderitas, which is just north of Chetumal on the Bay.  If you have done that, I hope you can give me a link, and let me know how it's going.

Newer. Here's a link to real estate around Chetumal, just north of the border.
