Fishing: Chapter 1.5
I have a young partner, Robyn, who is
helping me look for bonefish. I
have my 8 ½ foot fly rod, but no reel or line, so I’m going to Chetumal (by
boat, a first time) on Tuesday & try to find a tackle shop.
What’s the word for “Tackle Shop” in Spanish?
<Articulos Deportes is “Sporting Goods”, actually “articles of
sporting”>
We want to go fishing on Wednesday. <Miercules> For fifty dollah, we have a nifty boat but the motor is
broken. We try to rent a motor
for Wednesday, and EVERYBODY is
going fishing on Wednesday. (the
solunar tables must be right on, eh?) Then
I find a gringo friend with a boat and a little motor, only the trailer needs
a tire & maybe a rim. I will
go see, and probably fix it on Monday. (Today
we go out to Consejo to look up the sailor who will take us to Chetumal on
Tuesday. ) Can you see why I say
“I’m pretty busy.”??
When I was asking about fishing, I couldn’t
get anyone to talk about it. Now
that I’m actually going, everybody wants to give us advice!!
Unfortunately, none of them have actually fly fished for bonefish, and
they probably don’t want to, since the darn things are really hard to catch
and no good to eat (compared to snook, snapper, seabass, stripers, etc. etc.)
We are looking for the same clear water
that you see in the pictures in the fishing links
I gave you. I will tell you how
it goes, of course.

Afterward: There are no decent tackle shops in
Chetumal for fly fisherman. The nearest is on San Pedro (easily accessible
by plane.) Ron, the gringo who offered to loan me his boat if I
would fix his trailer, was so drunk when he made the offer that he didn't even
remember my name later. (I've never seen him sober, so how could I
tell?)
