BELIZEAN POLITICS, 2006-7
December 2006
In late 1999, I wrote my first page on Belizean Politcs.
You can read it here. I decided that I would
not focus on Politics, but rather upon Economics, and I created my Economics 101
page and continued to expand on it over the years. I have watched
the Belizean Political Scene with interest and have always been tempted to
comment, but I have held my counsel on this site.
Instead, I have been active on a yahoo groups list called
bz-policsci (belizean political scence. You can examine and possible join
that list here. (You need to be a member to read the files and
archives.)
The moderator of that list is Trevor Vernon. Trevor and I have had many
interesting discussions, both on and off that list, and he is a Belizean with
remarkable integrity (a quality I find wanting in most Belizeans.)
Most recently, Trevor and his wife Karla have launched a new weekly
newspaper, the Independent Reformer.
I will describe it here. .
I will add many comments on my view of the current
political situation in the next few days.
Shadow
players: ecotourism, development, corruption and state politics in Belize New
(This is a pdf file on this site.) I first read this
interesting paper in 2002, and it gave me a much better understanding of
"the way things work in Belize." It has been posted on the
bz-polisci list (yahoogroups) for a couple of years, but I think it's important
enuf to put it here. Rosaleen has just written a new book, which you can
read about here.
June
2007. Update.
We are
supporting the Independent Reformer,
a rebel newspaper dedicated to political reform. We have are
also publishing a proposed political platform (called a Manifesto
in Belize) for the upcoming elections.
You can find a copy here.
The
democratic process of self-government is alive and well in Belize!
