Gary & Rick Hit the Cayes  (pronounced Keees)

Gary Hotchkiss is one of my oldest dearest friends.  He was Best Man at Charlotte's & my wedding, and we've been playing together in bands, off and on, for about 30 years.  He is the best C&W drummer I've every played with.  Just about the time we left Colorado Springs, he left too, to go help his family raise grapes just north of Sacramento.  When I tracked him down and called him there, he started making plans to come and visit. This February, he arrived for ten days, and we set out to do a little "roaring", as we used to call it in Colorado.

As soon as he got off the plane in Ladyville, I could see that he had lost a lot of weight.  He'd just gotten out of the hospital from a serious hernia operation, and said he was on a "see food" diet. "I can eat everything I see."  We commenced to try to fatten him up!

On Monday, we took my favorite Tourist Trip, the 6-hour boat trip to Laminai.  (Read about our previous trip here.)

Charlotte was along with the camera, and she took some pictures, which (unfortunately) are the only pix I have of his visit.

Gary had a big grin on his face here, and he seemed to keep that grin for the next eight days. They've done a lot to Laminai since we were there last, and I still think it's the best one day trip you can take in Belize, especially for the money.  [$40US a person, includes lunch]  The trip now includes a good look (thru binocs) at a nest of the incredibly rare Jabiru Storks, complete with mom or dad and a bunch of little storks.

Above, we're getting off the boat, about to enter the ruins.  I look exasperated because my shirt seems to have inherited the Panza Grande belonging to its previous owner (my son-in-law, Doug Mason.)

Tuesday, Gary and I invaded Chetumal and attempted (unsuccessfully) to dent the supply of Cerveza and José Cuervo in the cantinas along the Bay Front there.  Tuesday night was Jazz Night at Marverton's in Corozal, and Garry traded licks with The Bad Czech.

We planned a tour of the Cayes:  One day & night in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, one day and night on Caye Caulker, and then to Belize City, and the airport at Ladyville.

Wednesday morning, we began our tour of the Cayes with a water taxi ride to San Pedro  Click here to go along to San Pedro with us.
